Chalk Zaldivar has a way of creating art with a child-like interpretation of adult subject-matter that provokes some if not a lot of people. But this is only an icebreaker served to dispense humor that is inspired by esoteric gaps, distance between familiar codes, social conventions, and preconceived ideas. Zaldivar’s brand of humor is curiously transgressive as his distinctive way of rendering characters into something recognizable but altogether uneasy becomes a taxonomy ranging from the cartoonish to the grotesque. He allows a mercurial force to guide his hand and probably just like his dead art influences, he creates his own species of humans only to carry a psychological intrigue that has been the fulcrum of his practice.
Leaning more toward irony and the tactile whimsy of art appropriation, Zaldivar approaches his process with a chuckling rebellious spirit. In this show “Fake It While You Make It”, Zaldivar recreates famous works of art while abandoning philosophical contexts and conventional means to convey what he calls “an amateur take on masterpieces”. His paintings, however, are far from what he asserts as a gawky representation of his works. They are derived from compositions of old and glorified masters, heedfully produced and parodized with cheeky humor and a signature smiley. As Zaldivar dives deeper into recontextualizing famous works of art, he taps into a bunch of other associations, removing architectural guises and replacing them with contradiction, political incorrectness and a hint of bittersweet paradox— not necessarily to indulge his audience with a palatable experience but rather to summon perhaps a secret giggle.
